Between mid-February and the end of March, in Mito, inside the Kairaku-en garden, takes place the Mito Plum Festival (Mito Ume Matsuri). More than 3000 "Prunus mume" trees are blossoming during this period, making the garden look spectacular, and as usual for the Japanese cities, some of the city's manhole covers are decorated with a red and white ume blossoms design...
