Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Bonbori, Japanese traditional lighting equipment

Sun, April 28, 2013, by Muza-chan
One of the most typical and traditional models of Japanese paper lanterns is the bonbori: the paper is applied on a hexagonal wooden frame, with the top left open.

Unlike the better known chōchin lantern, which is widely used with electric bulbs, the bonbori can be rarely seen today. Until now, I have seen them only at a couple of festivals, but I recently discovered this one beautifully displayed inside the Sumiya museum from Shimabara, Kyoto.
