Dai-San Daiba

In 1853, planning to protect Edo against attacks from sea, the Tokugawa shogunate started the construction of 6 fortresses built on artificial islands. The fortresses were armed with cannon batteries - daiba in Japanese - hence the name of today's islands Daiba and Odaiba. The main threat was at the time the Kurofune (Black Ships) fleet of Commodore Matthew Perry, which was just arrived.

One of these islands, the Dai-San Daiba ( 第三台場 ) or "Battery nr.3", which survived until today, was transformed into a park, the Metropolitan Daiba Park.
