The
Kumade is in fact an entire collection of lucky charms, tied together on a bamboo rake, for "raking in wealth and good fortune". You can find there
kobans (old Japanese oval gold coins), treasure chests (for good luck in business), statues of
Shichi Fukujin and
Maneki Neko, cranes (symbols of longevity in Japan) and turtles (symbols of good luck and longevity) and many, many other good luck charms...
Unlike the other lucky charms,
kumade have a special rule: each year you must buy a larger one... That way, on every New Year you will get more good luck charms, but returning to a smaller one brings misfortune, so be careful what you buy in the first year... (^_^)
