Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

The great statues of Todaiji Nara

Tue, October 27, 2015, by Muza-chan
The largest building in the world made entirely of wood is the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) of the Todaiji Temple in Nara. Daibutsuden houses a set of three great statues: in the middle is one of the most famous Great Buddhas in Japan, known as the Nara Daibutsu, representing Vairocana Buddha, a 15-meters-tall statue that is also the largest bronze image of Vairocana Buddha in the world.

Vairocana Buddha is flanked by two just a bit smaller statues, one representing Kokuzo Bosatsu (Akaśagarbha Bodhisattva in Sanskrit), the "Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Memory", and Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva), photographed here, the "Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World's Sounds".
