Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Hakone Checkpoint foot soldiers quarters

Thu, November 29, 2018, by Muza-chan
The Hakone Checkpoint was a complex of buildings surrounded by fences and guarded with a sentry tower. The entrance was only through the 2 gates, one for travelers coming from Kyoto and one for Edo.

Photographed here is the gate from Edo and the foot soldiers quarters (Ashigaru bansho), building which also served as bureau for minor officials.
