The Heian Shrine from Kyoto was built in 1895, on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the establishment of
Heian-kyo - the former name of Kyoto - by the Emperor Kammu. The complex was intended to be a replica of the first Imperial Palace, built in Heian-kyo in 794, but because the available space was limited, it was designed as a reduced-scale replica, at the 5/8 scale. But even so, its size is impressive!
In today's photo, you can see right in the middle the Outer Sanctuary (
Daigoku-den), to the left the White Tiger Tower (
Byakko-ro) and to the right the Blue Dragon Tower (
Soryu-ro).
