Inokashira Park, the water supply of Edo

One of the main issues tackled by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu when he established Edo as Japan's capital was ensuring the running water necessities.

The water was brought to Edo from the springs of the Inokashira pond, combined with several smaller rivers, brought to the city by digging the Kanda canal waterworks, thus creating what we know today as the Kanda River.
