Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Inside the traditional Japanese house, Irori

Sun, November 29, 2015, by Muza-chan
Inside a traditional Japanese house, the main cooking space was kamado, a stove made of clay, fitted in a space especially built without the wooden floor.

In the larger houses, there was also a secondary stove, installed in a lowered space filled with sand and surrounded by a frame made of stone. Called irori, it was made for heating and lighting, but it was also used for cooking or for heating water.
