Inuyama Castle

The Inuyama castle was owned by the Naruse clan since 1617, but after the Meiji Restauration it became the property of the state, like many other castles that were spared from demolition.

However, in a case unique in Japan, after it was severely damaged by the earthquake from 1891, the castle was returned to the Naruse family, with the condition of performing repair and maintenance works.

132 years later, after a major restoration in 1965, the castle was donated to the Inuyama city, and today it is maintained by a civic foundation created especially for this purpose.
