Most of the time, the giant torii gate in front of the Itsukushima Shrine on the Miyajima Island is completely surrounded by water, giving the impression that it floats. It can be seen from up close only by boat.

But during the low tide the water recedes, and if you want, you can go by foot right next to the torii, near the two magnificent camphor tree trunks, which were half-a-millennium old when they were used to built the sacred gate...
