Built on top of a 200 meters tall hill, the Iwakuni castle had the advantage of the elevated terrain, so it was a worthy fortress. However, it lasted only 7 years, after which it was dismantled, because an edict issued at the beginning of the Edo period allowed only one castle per domain. Then, the Iwakuni castle was sacrificed for the
Hagi castle.
The castle we see today in Iwakuni was reconstructed from concrete in 1962, nevertheless it is a symbol of the city, together with the nearby Kintai-kyo bridge.
