400 years old Japanese Cedars in Nikko

Almost 400 years ago, Matsudaira Masatsuna, a daimyo serving the Tokugawa Shogun, started a project that took him 20 years: he planted in Nikko over 200000 Sugi 「杉」 - Japanese cedars - trees donated afterwards to the Toshougu Shrine.

Only 13000 trees survived until today and, according to Guinness Book, they are forming the longest tree-lined avenue in the world (about 35km).
The trees around the Toshougu Shrine from Nikko are from the same period, and the best place to admire them is probably on this beautiful alley connecting Toshougu to the Futarasan Shrine. The trees are simply overwhelming:
