Japanese cherry tree varieties, Kanzan

As I recently wrote, the Japanese cherry (Prunus serrulata) has more than 200 varieties, and the differences between them can be substantial. Not only that the flowers vary in size, structure, and color, but the shape of the tree, the shape of the leaves and the blooming period can differ widely.

Photographed here is the Kanzan variety (also called Sekiyama), with bright pink blossoms having between 30 and 50 petals and with coppery brown leaves. It is a late blooming variety, in Tokyo the average blooming period being during mid to late April.
