Japanese New Year traditions, the 108 bell chimes

One of the most famous bells in Japan, on the sacred Mount Koya, is rung five times a day, at fixed hours. With a size of 2.12 meters diameter, it is the 4th largest bell in Japan and its sound can be heard from afar.

According to tradition, the bell is rung 108 times on the night of the New Year, to purify with a chime each of the 108 delusions and sufferings accumulated in the past year...
