One of the modernization projects started at the beginning of the Meiji Period was the modernization of the postal service. The project, inspired by the United Kingdom's Post Office, was supervised by the statesman Maejima Hisoka, who thus founded the Japanese postal service and became known as Yūbin Seido no Chichi, "Father of the Postal System".

After almost 150 years, Japan Post is today one of the most modern postal systems in the world but, at least in some cities, it managed to preserve the old time charm by using buildings and post boxes dating from the Meiji Period...
