Ryugu-jo 龍宮城 (meaning "Dragon palace castle") is a mythical place from the Japanese folklore, the underwater palace of the dragon god of the sea. Due to the popularity of the myth, in Japan there are several constructions built in
Ryugu-zukuri, a style of traditional architecture based on
Ryugu-jo.
The building in this photo is the gate of the Sofuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki. Built in 1849, its color was inspired by the legend that says the
Ryugu-jo is made of red and white coral.
