Japanese traditions, Kyoto Otowa waterfall

The name of the famous Kyoto temple "Kiyomizu-dera" can be translated as "clear water temple" and originates from a nearby spring that creates a small waterfall, Otowa-no-taki, and is also the source of a local tradition. The water flow is divided into three streams and, according to the legend, each of these streams has the power to fulfill a wish: one grants longevity, one offers success at studies and one grants good luck in love.

The visitors are using ladles to drink from the water streams, but the nicest part of the tradition is that it is not recommended to drink from all the three streams. One must choose one or two, but never all the three benefits...
