Karahafu at Gokoku Shrine, Sendai

The undulated shape gable is a typically Japanese traditional architectural element called karahafu (meaning "elegant gable"). Invented during the Heian period, it was originally used for the architecture of the Shinto shrines, as you can see in this photo taken at the Gokoku shrine in Sendai.
