Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Kyoto Kitano Tenmangu shrine

Sun, August 18, 2019, by Muza-chan
The Kitano Tenmangu shrine in Kyoto was the first Shinto shrine dedicated to a real person enshrined as a deity, Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who lived about 1100 years ago.

He was enshrined here, and in many other Tenmangu shrines, as Tenjin, the god of learning.
