In the medieval Japan, during the Tokugawa shogunate, the karamon type of gates, covered with an undulating roof called karahafu, were symbols of authority.
One of the most spectacular Karamon gates, lavishly adorned with golden ornaments and sculptures is at the the Nijō castle in Kyoto, at the entrance of the Ninomaru palace.
