Land reclamation in Tokyo Bay

The Tokyo Bay area was constantly remodeled through land reclamation since the Edo Period, first by drainage of swamps (one such site is the today's Shiodome Sio-Site, in the middle of my photo), later with artificial islands (like today's Odaiba).

Through land reclamation projects Japan added to its area an impressive total of 249 square kilometers... and the process continues. Two artificial islands built in 1973, located south of Odaiba, called Chuo bohatei ("central breakwater"), will be enlarged and landscaped for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
