Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Mikoshi swaying

Thu, May 2, 2019, by Muza-chan
An important component of the Shinto festivals are the parades of the portable shrines - mikoshi. During the parade, the mikoshi groups often stops in front of a shop or other business, and the mikoshi is strongly swayed by the bearers, as in this photo taken several years ago at the Fukagawa Hachiman water-throwing festival in Tokyo.

The significance is to bring blessings to the respective business, by... amusing the kami sitting inside the shrine.
