Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

The most famous "kaminari-okoshi" sweets store

Sun, June 2, 2013, by Muza-chan
Ever since the famous shopping street Nakamise-dori was established (about 300 years ago, during the Edo period), among its main attractions were the sweet stores. One of the traditional Japanese sweet snacks originated here, the kaminari-okoshi crispy puffed rice sweets, named like this because they were sold right next to the Kaminarimon Gate.

Amazingly, one of the stores selling kaminari-okoshi survived until today on the same spot: Tokiwado, the building on the left of Kaminarimon. The beautiful building we see today was rebuilt after the war with an inspired design, matching the gate's architecture. As for the sweets, they are still prepared in front of the customers (video), exactly like in the Edo period... And although I cannot eat too much of them, they are my favorite Japanese traditional sweets... (^_^)
