Naniwa, Osaka

Almost 1400 years ago, on the place visible in today's photo (taken from the Osaka castle) was located the Naniwa Palace, the seat of Emperor Kotoku. Kotoku moved the capital of Japan from the Yamato province, to Naniwa, today's Osaka.

Naniwa, the old name, survived until today as the name of a bridge, and as the name ward which includes the renowned entertainment district of Namba. Also, the name Namba is a different reading of the kanji for Naniwa: 難波.
