Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Nara Great Buddha and Kokuzo Bosatsu

Tue, October 29, 2019, by Muza-chan
Inside the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) of the Todai-ji Temple in Nara, the largest building in the world made entirely of wood, there are 3 giant statues.

In the middle is the Great Buddha statue, representing Buddha Vairocana (the “bliss body” of the historical Gautama Buddha), on the left there's Kannon Bosatsu (the Sanskrit name is Avalokiteśvara), and on the right, visible in this photo, is Kokuzo Bosatsu (Ākāśagarbha), the Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Memory.
