Obon paper lanterns

The Obon dances take place in the evening, and whether the celebration is held in a park or at a temple, the place is adorned with paper lanterns, like in this photo taken at the Tsukiji Hongwanji temple.

The lit up lanterns signify the guiding for the ancestor's souls, which are believed to return home during the Obon period.
