Old Gion Shidare Sakura

The Japanese custom of hanami appeared long time ago, apparently during the Nara Period, so it has been practiced for at least 1300 years... But there are in Japan at least 2 cherry trees older than that! The Yamataka Jindai cherry tree in Hokuto City is believed to be 2000 years old and the Usuzumi-zakura in Gifu is 1500 years old...

It is said that any visit to Japan during the sakura season should include at least one old tree. And if you're in Kyoto and want to see up close such a remarkable tree, you can visit the "younger" (only 80 years old) but spectacular Gion Shidare Sakura in the Maruyama Park, in Gion.
