Old shrine in Hakata, Kushida-jinja
Kushida-jinja was established more than 1200 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Koken, at the same time when the port of Hakata port was opened to trade with China. The shrine was burned during the medieval wars, but was rebuilt by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587. Today, Kushida-jinja is nicknamed by locals "O-Kushida-san", and it is considered to be the guardian of Hakata.
