Following the example of the domain's lord, who was constructing a garden close to its castle or palace, the samurai were building next to their house one or more gardens, according to their possibilities.

Usually, the largest garden was designed to be admired from the engawa, and it was featuring several carefully trimmed shrubs, a few trees, selected rocks and maybe a stone lantern...
