Shimabara Castle

Like many other Japanese castles, the Shimabara castle was demolished during the Meiji Restoration. The reconstruction started in 1960 with a turret, followed 4 years later by the castle tower (tenshu) and 12 years later by the second turret, Tatsumi yagura. The impressive walls and deep moats were mostly preserved from the original structure and together with the rebuilt buildings are bringing back a bit of the old times charm...
