The 5 major roads connecting the medieval Edo to the main cities were serviced by inns offering accommodation to travelers and horse messenger services.

This is how Shinjuku appeared on the Koshu-Kaido road. It was built on the land of a daimyo named Naito, so in was named Naito-Shinjuku, meaning "Naito new inn". An entire city was born around the inn, and the name remained until today...
