Shinkyo, an extra-ordinary bridge

The construction of Shinkyo, the first bridge over the Daiya river in Nikko, is linked to an interesting legend and the bridge was considered sacred.

That's why when it was rebuilt in the form we know today, during the time of Empress Meishō, the ordinary people were allowed only to... look at the bridge, crossing the river on a different, nearby bridge. Only the Empress, a few generals and Imperial messengers were allowed to use it.

The interdiction remained in place until modern times when, 40 years ago, Shinkyo was transformed into an open-air museum. And yes, now everyone can cross it...
