Since the Edo period, the area next to the Sumida river was known as Shitamachi (meaning "low city"), and was a place inhabited by merchants and craftsmen. Even today, the area has a cozy atmosphere, with many places such as the one photographed here. Streets lined by small shops, decorated with potted flowers, seemingly unchanged for the last hundred years...
