Shoyo-en Japanese Garden

The renowned Rinno-ji Temple from Nikko is also famous for its spectacular Japanese garden, created in the Chisen-kaiyushiki garden style (garden with a pond in the center). This Japanese garden style was very popular in Japan during the 18 and 19 centuries, many Japanese feudal lords having this kind of garden on their domains.

The garden from Rinno-ji dates from the beginning of the Edo period and it was arranged in today's form by Issai Sato, a Confucian scholar who also named it as Shoyo-en Garden.
