During the Edo Period, along the main roads such as Tokaido and Nakasendo, several towns, about 10 kilometers apart, were selected to be places of accommodation for the travelers. They were also offering storage for goods and were staging posts. They were called shukubamachi, and one of the best preserved of them is Tsumagojuku in Nagano, a place that looks like it was frozen in time...
