Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Sugiyama house old Kano school paintings

Sun, June 24, 2018, by Muza-chan
The oldest house in Tondabayashi Jinaimachi, near Osaka, is the Sugiyama house which belonged to the richest family in this merchant town. It looks today as it was in 1747, and was designated an important cultural property.

The house can be visited inside, with the interior perfectly preserved, featuring these beautiful fusuma made by a painter of the Kano school, one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting in the Edo period.
