That's too bad in my opinion, because a large part of the "Electric Town" charm was given by the maze of small stores scattered all over the place, in backstreets and passageways...
Standing out today are constructions like the Akihabara Crossfield complex (including the 31-story tall Akihabara Daibiru Building and the 22-story tall Akihabara UDX, finished in 2006) or the Sumitomo Fudosan Akihabara Building, a 19-story tower built in June 2009.
For now, a part of the old Akihabara is still visible, still creating a warm atmosphere, like in this photo where, reflected on the Sumitomo Fudosan, we can see the old Taito Station and Comic Toranoana, having the huge UDX building in the background:
