The commercial district of Tenjin from Chūō-ku, Fukuoka, is known today as one of the largest commercial districts from Japan and the largest from Kyushu... so it is hard to believe that the origin of the area is related to a... religious establishment.

Indeed, the name of the district comes from the Shinto deity enshrined in this small shrine, the Shinto kami of scholarship, Tenjin. Today the shrine seems modest, but in the past this was the guardian shrine of the Fukuoka castle, located nearby...
