Mon, August 7, 2017, by Muza-chan
To make the largest Shinto straw rope (shimenawa) in Japan, which is the shimenawa of the Kagura-den at the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, 800 people are working with straws harvested from 3 hectares of rice. The resulting rope weights 4.4 ton and is replaced once every 6 to 8 years. The current shimenawa, photographed here, was made in 2013.
