From the city of Edo, which was just under 700,000 inhabitants in 1800 (when the largest city was Beijing, with more than 1 million people), Tokyo grew to 1.5 million in 1900 (by then the largest city was London, with 6.5 million people!).
In 1950 Tokyo was at the 7 million mark (when the largest city was New York, with 12.5 million inhabitants), then the city grew amazingly: over 20 million inhabitants in 1965 and 23 million in 1975...
But in the field of architecture, with all this growth, Tokyo somehow managed to remain a low-rise city, with relatively few skyscrapers compared to other megacities...
