Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Tokyo Station 100 years Anniversary

Sat, December 20, 2014, by Muza-chan
Today marks exactly 100 years since the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building was inaugurated, on December 20, 1914. A real treat for architecture lovers, the today's building was recently renovated and now it has the same Neo-Baroque design as 100 years ago, when it was designed by the famous Japanese architect Tatsuno Kingo.

However, during its long history, Tokyo Station suffered several major changes. Partially destroyed by the bombings in May 1945, it was hastily rebuilt with just two floors instead of three and with much simpler roofs, without its trademark domes. In 2007 the building went into a 5-years-long renovation project, and while still serving one of the busiest stations in Japan, it was restored to its original design.

At its 100th anniversary, Tokyo Station is still one of the important landmarks of Tokyo.
