Traditional wooden townhouses, machiya

The traditional Japanese townhouses, machiya, are long wooden houses, used both as shops and as homes by the merchants and craftsmen. During the Edo period, the commercial streets in Japan were looking much like in this photo, taken in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture.
