During the Edo period, Okuya was a secondary inn (waki-honjin in Japanese) in the post town of Tsumago-juku, on the Nakasendo road, one of the two roads which were connecting Edo to Kyoto.

Perfectly preserved, the house is today opened to visitors and you can experience inside a fairy tale atmosphere, due to the amazingly ingenious lighting: the natural sunlight beams are filtered by the smoke of the irori...
