Tsuruga-jo, the castle of Aizu

The Azuchi castle was an impressive, 7 stories tall tower built by Oda Nobunaga in 1579 as his main residence, and it created a new trend in castle construction, due to its lavish decorations and also because the new construction style.

In 1591, the samurai Ujisato Gamo became the lord of the Aizu domain, and influenced by Nobunaga's construction, erected a very strong castle named Tsuruga-jō. The new castle was originally built with 7 floors, but after an earthquake damaged it in 1611, was rebuilt with only 5 floors. Demolished after the Boshin War, Tsuruga-jō was rebuilt in 1965, reproducing the architecture of the last tower, including the red-tinted roofs.
