Ueno Lotus Pond

During the Edo period, the place of today's Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond belonged to the Kan’ei-ji Temple. After the Meiji Restoration, the area became Imperial property and in 1924 was conferred to the city of Tokyo, on the occasion of the wedding of prince Hirohito.

With a length of 2 kilometers, the lake is divided in 3 sections, the Boat Pond (Boto no Ike), where boat rides are possible, the Cormorant Pond (U no Ike), which belongs to the Ueno Zoo and the Lotus Pond (Hasu no Ike).

Like in the old times, the Lotus Pond is one of the best places to admire the red lotus - during the Middle of July the surface of the pond is completely covered by the lotus flowers. Also like in the old days, you can still find here beautiful girls, traditionally dressed in yukata, admiring the flowers...
