Unusual Japanese architecture, Ushiku Daibutsu gate

After discovering the ultra-modern Isshin-ji temple gate from Osaka, with a futuristic design inspired by the traditional Niomon gate, in the Ibaraki Prefecture I found another remarkable cross between traditional and modern architecture, at the feet of the third tallest statue in the world, Ushiku Daibutsu.

Inspired by the old Sanmon gate but built of glass and metal, it reveals the statues inside, always present in the Sanmon gates, but never shown to visitors... The three statues here are representing the Buddhist Shakyamuni trinity (Shakyamuni Buddha, Samantabhadra and Manjusri).
