Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Souvenir Medal Coin Machine

Sun, October 10, 2010, by Muza-chan
I like souvenirs and I like coins... I've seen these penny press machines both in Japan and Europe, in tourist areas, museums, trains stations or airports and I was always tempted to add another medal to my collection.
I've noticed that in Europe they are usually mechanical, hand crank operated, pressing the medals out of coins, while in Japan they are electrical and using copper alloy as raw material.

The machine from this picture is from Mount Takao, Tokyo, and offers three medals: one with the Takao Tozan funicular, one with the emblematic Tengu and one with the Takao-san Monkey Park. Needless to say, I got them all...
