Visiting Tokyo, Kaminarimon big lantern

Kaminarimon, the prominent gate of the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, was first erected about 400 years ago. Although it was destroyed for several times during the history, it was reconstructed every time, and the last time it was renovated 55 years ago.

Its spectacular, 4-meters-tall red lantern is made of paper and it weights half a ton. Of course, since it is made of paper, it is replaced from time to time, so the one we see today was installed in 2003, on the 400th anniversary of the Edo period...
