5173 Wonderful Sculptures at Toshogu Shrine

Sat, December 17, 2011, by Muza-chan
There are exactly 5173 sculptures at the Toshogu Shrine from Nikko, a truly impressive number. Half of them are inaccessible inside the sacred area, but there are so many to be seen. I visited Toshougu several times and I still don't think I have covered all the interesting places...

Here's a picture that I think shows the richness and beauty of the sculptures from Toshogu: on the left side you can see the wall surrounding the sacred area, decorated with sculptures representing birds and flowers, painted in vivid colors. On the Yomeimon Gate only (which can be seen at the middle of the wall) there are 508 sculptures!
To the right, the first tower is the Drum Tower (Korou), decorated with 38 sculptures representing turtles and dragons and the tower in the back is the Bell Tower (Showrow), with 78 sculptures representing cranes, dragons and giraffes.
